Robinson and Ainsley Canyons, LT Murray Wildlife Area, WA
June 2022

Synopsis
In desperate need of vitamin D during a prolonged wet and cold PNW spring, we headed over the mountains to one of our favorite spots - Robinson Canyon. The cold and wet affected Eastern Washington as well. Blooming wildflowers were pushed back and condensed into a wonderful blanket of color everywhere. The butterflies during this trip were also outstanding, with the wildflower meadows a flutter in the colors of fritillaries, swallowtails, blues, and even a monarch.

The Warbling and Cassin's Vireo, Yellow-breasted Chat, and Veery were still singing from the ponderosa and thick riparian. Western Wood-Pewees nested at the ends of bare branches over the creek. In the evening, the Common Nighthawks entertained us with their areal acrobatics and the Sooty Grouse could be heard displaying from the treetops. Young mule deer stuck close to their mom, and a trio of California ground squirrels were perhaps too venturous by the roadside.

Robinson Canyon was just what we needed this long spring/winter to recharge and reconnect.
