Rampart Ridge trail, Longmire, Mount Rainier National Park WA
June 2013

Synopsis
Rampart Ridge trail is a great short loop trail through tall stands old growth forest and boggy undergrowth. It offers a few views of Longmire, Paradise River, Tumtum Peak and of course Mount Rainier (if it's not hidden in a cloud). The trail was pretty popular both with humans and with mosquitos, which were in great swarms near the top of the loop.

As birding goes, it wasn't hopping with activity. The most activity was found at the trailhead at Longmire springs where there were Warbling Vireos and MacGillivary's Warblers singing from the alders. From the trail up the ridge, there were many Townsend's and Hermit Warblers (and likely hybrids of the two) singing from the pines, although I never got a look at one.

Despite the low bird activity, it was still a nice trail through some grand trees with many blooming coralroots, beargrass, and orchids.
