Malibu, CA June 2015 Synopsis For work, I took a very brief trip to Malibu for a collaboration with a PI at Pepperdine University. It was such a short trip, in fact, that my only daylight hours free were 2 hours one overcast morning. I walked down to the Malibu Lagoon State Beach, where a creek collects into a lagoon before spilling into the ocean. The mixing of fresh into seawater over the sandy beach hosted a myriad of birdlife, including Caspian, Elegant and Least Terns, Brant, Double-crested Cormorants, and Great and Snowy Egrets. I would have liked to explore the area further, but given my limited time, was lucky to even visit the lagoon. There seems to be many parks and natural areas near Malibu. Most of them have fees associated with them. I guess it is the price for keeping nature in an area where the real estate is prime. I wouldn’t return to the area solely for birding. There are probably many other better spots in SoCal that are more affordable and perhaps less traffic plagued. Top
