Independence and North Lakes, Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, WA July 2010 | Synopsis | Pictures | Bird/Critter/Flower Lists | Information | Synopsis For a summer day hike, we went up to the nearby Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. We spent the day hiking up to Independence Lake and North Lake where we were rewarded the an abundance of blooming wildflowers, great views, and montane wildlife. Snow still covered the last 0.5-1.0 mile of the trail down to North Lake making us decide against hiking all the way down to the lake. Still we were able to enjoy the view of North Lake below and the Enchantments beyond. Near the pass, a pika was actively calling and scurring around the rocks. We got great views of the pika, probably the closest we've been to a pika. We also flushed mother Sooty Grouse, who watched us warily. We weren't sure what she was doing until we moved on and flushed the chick! The hike was a refreshing escape away from the city. The trail was fairly busy with other's looking for a little escape, but there was a great amount of beauty and wilderness to loose ourselves in.
