Dungeness Spit Synopsis Dungeness Spit a sliver of sand, driftwood, and marsh jets out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It's a great place to find sandpipers, Bald Eagles, loons, Harlequin Ducks, and the occasional winter-visiting Snowy Owl. Though many birders traditionally scan the spit from the parking lot of the Three Crabs restaurant, there's much more to enjoy on the 5 mile hike out to the lighthouse. On our hike down the sandy and cobble beach of the spit, numerous Red-throated Loons and Harlequin Ducks would surface within 50 feet of us. Looking along the spit we could see a plethora of Bald Eagles perched on the driftwood, and the many Black Brant that floated over the bay. The Dungeness Recreation Area was a great place to camp. Most of the campsites provide a decent amount of privacy as they are well tucked into the surrounding forest. A walking path separates the campsites from the strait so there aren't great views of the water from any of the campsites. This little park is a nice oasis in the increasing development. Another perk of this park is its proximity to other great birding sites such as Ediz Hook in Port Angeles and the Dungeness River Audubon Center. Top
